Recovery from the Ise Bay Typhoon

Letter of appreciation from Minister of Transportation

On September 26, 1959, a huge typhoon hit the Ise Bay area, causing severe damage in the Pacific coast of central Japan. In Mie Prefecture, winds of 53 km per hour were recorded and the city of Yokkaichi and its surrounding areas were completely flooded. NSG’s Yokkaichi Plant was forced to close after its seawall collapsed.
However, as a result of dedicated restoration efforts, full production was resumed just four days after the storm. Glass products were shipped daily in an effort to supply Nagoya and other heavily damaged regions. NSG was given an award by the Minister of Transport for “stabilizing the sheet glass market and contributing to restoration of damaged areas.”
