Dedication of Maizuru Plant

Maizuru Plant at the start of operations

As the post-war recovery progressed in Japan, sheet glass was in great demand for the construction of taller and earthquake-resistant buildings. Against this background, the ground was broken in September 1950 for NSG’s third plant to be built in Maizuru, Kyoto Prefecture.
However, the projected cost of construction went up from 800 million yen to 1.4 billion yen because of a rapid inflation caused by the Korean War. To secure necessary funds, NSG president Nakamura had to meet with the Governor of Bank of Japan which was tightening the lending. In July 1952, the much-awaited plant opening ceremonies were held and the Maizuru Plant started operations.
