Sumitomo to rebuild America Japan Sheet Glass Company

Sumitomo had invested in many different companies but never dispatched any personnel or was directly involved in management. However, in 1922, Sumitomo provided funding and became directly involved in the company’s management. Kouichi Osumi of Sumitomo Bank assumed the post of managing director, Kohei Oishi was appointed plant manager and several other Sumitomo executives led the rebuilding of America Japan Sheet Glass Company. With the arrival of a management team from Sumitomo, the company adopted the “Sumitomo Spirit” which places “prime importance on integrity and sound management in the conduct of its business rather than easy profit” as its guiding principle. The “Sumitomo Spirit” lives on to this day.
