Production of plate glass

An artist’s impression of the plate glassworks at Cowley Hill, St Helens, in 1879.

Pilkington decided to manufacture plate glass at its Cowley Hill site on the outskirts of St Helens. The company soon overtook the plate glass production of the nearby Ravenhead factory, which was then in the hands of the London & Manchester Plate Glass Company and until then, the country’s market leader.
